Student Council

The Student Council was originally formed with representatives from student-organised initiatives within the school, but we are constantly looking for fresh minds to join us.

We want to engage and encourage students to play a more active role in shaping the school. Student voices are crucial!

We see ourselves as a bridge connecting students, staff and teachers with information and resources. This school is not just an assemblage of individual makers, but a place where we care for one another. As a council, we want to lend a hand, share knowledge, and listen carefully.

Through our activities we want to cultivate an even ground for all students and work for greater transparency within the administrative structures of the institution.

Radical Imaginations : Open Call

How can staying together be an artistic practice?
Coming from last year’s powerful learnings about Resting and Assembling as artistic and resistance practices, in this Spring Funding we want to continue to offer support to fellow students who want to put their creative energy into building connections with each other in spaces, circumstances, and times when being disconnected may seem, instead, the most accessible possibility.

Safe migration and decent work

Almost half of Rietveld and Sandberg students are immigrants to the Netherlands. Many of the Dutch passport holders have been migrants sometime in their life. Migrants might legally be defined by foreign birth or by foreign citizenship, but migration, by choice or by force, is also a dynamic political, economic and emotional process. ‘Safe migration and decent work’ is a multi-part project consisting of a lecture and two installations and performances that provides you with the theory and practice of making art on safe migration and decent work.

Pipe Workshop by SIS - Make your own Pipe!

Do you want to have an unique and amazing pipe that you make by your hands and clay? This is your chance.

I once made pipes with clay in ceramic workshop, and the result was amazing.

I've been carrying my pipe ( a monkey with cow pattern) all around Amsterdam since I made it, everywhere I go everyone who has seen it, love it so much. So, I had this idea of creating a workshop and share with everyone this interesting and easy process of how to make your own unique crazy pipe just with your bare hands, clay and fire.

BETWEEN GAME AND PLAY
Workshop with Jana Romanova
Place: Project Space FedLev 101

During this workshop, we’ll experiment with the notions of “game” and “play” in contemporary game design theory. Through a series of funny, yet serious, exercises we’ll create our small games in a physical space to see how game mechanics work. After that, we’ll add role-playing elements to it to see how it changes the dynamics and the general feeling of the game. These basic tools may help you in thinking about any types of games — both in physical and virtual spaces — and apply them to your artistic practice. It is a fun workshop with a lot of movement, you don’t need to be prepared for it at all. The only thing I ask you to bring with you is a playful mood )

Jana Romanova is a recent graduate of MA “Photography and Society” at KABK, in her current artistic work she mixes her past experience of working as a documentary photographer and creating live-action role-playing games for nine years. – janaromanova.com

_______ SESSION 2____________

New date: Monday, 9 May, 4-6 pm @ BC616

Gesturing together, failing together: A tragedy
with Joe from Critical Studies

Gestures are always relational: They connect different parts of our bodies, cite other gestures and reach from the self into the social space. Thus, they bring into being the possibility of a “we”. But who is this “we”? How do we and our bodies (tragically fail to) communicate these relations? This session is about gaining power and losing it, about performing shifting subject-object relations, about dissonance and chance harmonies. We will work with our bodies, voices and each other. It will be fun! Please wear comfy clothes. I will bring snacks and drinks :)

________SESSION 3___________

Friday, 20 May, from 11 am - afternoon @ The Auditorium

The Impossibility of Living without each other
with Philipp Bergmann and Thea Reifler (Shedhalle, Zurich)

A workshop format by Philipp Bergmann and Thea Reifler. Together with the participants they want to pursue the questions: How can we hold a space with and for each other? What can it mean to be each other’s guests? Together, artistic practices of sharing, listening, negotiating, sensing, tuning in will be explored. Hereby, aspects of conviviality, sustainability and diversity will come into play.

The workshop combines different elements:
• A lecture on their work as directors and curators of Shedhalle Zürich inspired by queer-feminist science fiction

• Performance scores that they used in their artistic work (with climbing harnesses)
• Social Justice and Radical Diversity training exercises

Note: For the workshop please wear comfortable clothes. A vegan, glutenfree lunch will be provided. As we want all participants to feel comfortable, please let us know beforehand if you have specific accessibility needs: johanna.ekenhorst@sandberg.nl

Thea Reifler (CH, no pronouns or they/them) and Philipp Bergmann(DE, no pronouns or they/them) work together in the fields of music theater, opera, performance, installation, direction and curation. In recent years they have been developing interdisciplinary artistic projects with a queer-feminist focus. They are currently living and working in Zurich and Berlin. For the years 2020-2025, Thea Reifler and Philipp Bergmann are working as artistic directors of Shedhalle Zurich. With their concept PROTOZONEN 2020-2025 they are establishing Shedhalle as a space for process-based art. In 2021/22, they are also curating BONE Performance Festival in Bern.

________SESSION 4____________

Monday, 23 May, 4.30-6.30 pm @ meeting point by the Rietveld billboard
MATTERING A TIME-SPACE OF THE GRASS FIELD
With Michał Dawid

With the use of our intuition we will test how it is to go out into the world and allow the world to contain us. We will move our bodies, sharpen the sense of touch and send our voices to the space. We will experiment with somatic writing techniques and check the possibilities of communication with enigmatic others.

________SESSION 5____________

Monday, 30 May, 5-7 pm @ BC616
AN INVITATION A FIGHT
With Ira Brand

This session is an invitation to fight, to practice, to watch, and to meet. An invitation to explore power, dominance, and submission, through our bodies, and to reflect on what it means to ‘play’ in these dynamics.

Ira Brand is an artist, performance-maker, writer, curator, and teacher. She creates live interdisciplinary performances: visceral, funny and tender attempts to explore often vast contemporary topics in a way that celebrates both personal and collective experience. Previous and current projects are about fear, ageing, illness, gender.
