Library Talks

Artists, designers and writers are invited to compile a selection of ten publications and give a lecture on this selection. During this lecture, they discuss their references and source material with the public, which creates a deeper understanding of an artist's practice. This lecture examines authorship and provides insight into research methods within an artistic practice. Within the library collection, subjective connections are made between subjects, so that the links are made between theory and practice.

Dorine van Meel's practice is situated within and between the media of moving image, writing and installation. Through the use of diaristic and intimate analyses of personal observations and conversations, mixed with reflections on twitter feeds, news items and music videos, the work attempts to expose current structures of power, whilst at the same time considering modes of resistance.

The Library Talks /w Paul Haworth

Paul Haworth writes and performs. Publications include ‘Letter to Robin Kinross’, co-written with Sam de Groot, and the trilogy ‘Silk Hankerchiefs’, ‘Alone, Desperate and Going Nowhere’ and ‘Jonny on a Chorizo’. Written in a mix of Cockney slang and Dickensian English, this trilogy records three years in the life of its London-based character Alex ‘Abs’ Brenchley, as he attempts to find love and start a club night.
Paul and Sam have made an album, ‘Illegal Emotions’, and he is in Amsterdam to record a new song. The in-progress-and-under-construction version of his latest novel, ‘Dramatic Society’, can be followed on his website homelovin.co.uk and he is currently developing a play, ‘Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer’, that premieres in May at Camden People’s Theatre, London.

The Library Talks #6 — Melanie Bonajo

Melanie Bonajo examines the paradoxes inherent to ideas of comfort. Through her videos, performances, photographs and installations, Bonajo studies subjects related to how technological advances and commodity-based pleasures increase feelings of alienation, removing a sense of belonging in an individual. Captivated by concepts of the divine, she explores the spiritual emptiness of her generation, examines peoples’ shifting relationship with nature and tries to understand existential questions by reflecting on our domestic situation, ideas around classification, concepts of home, gender and attitudes towards value.

Talk by David Senior

David Senior, Bibliographer at the Museum of Modern Art Library in New York, will discuss a history of artists' publications in the 20th and 21st centuries. There will be a few different stories about how artists and designers have used their little publications as containers for new ideas, creating lively and weird spaces to communicate work and archive art actions. Most examples will come from the collection of books that he works with at MoMA and several recent exhibitions he has organized of artists' books and ephemera.
David Senior is Bibliographer at the MoMA, New York. He is the curator of exhibitions at the MoMA library such as 'Access to Tools: Publications from the Whole Earth Catalog' and 'Please Come to the Show' and his writing has been published in Dot Dot Dot, Bulletins of the Serving Library, Frieze and other publications.
